DIY Little Red Riding Hood Costume

Hi all!  It's finally feeling like Fall around here in Southern California and I'm loving it!

This year, I  decided to be Little Red Riding Hood for Halloween.  After last year's party, I started making a list of costume ideas for this year so I wouldn't have to scramble at the last minute.  Little Red Riding Hood was at the top of my list from the get-go.  There's just something about capes (cloaks?) that I love.

I used this tutorial, so I won't be doing one here.  Hers was simple enough to follow.  You basically will just use 2 rectangular pieces of fabric - 1 bigger one for the body and 1 smaller one for the hood.  I ended up buying crushed panne - it was inexpensive and had a good look for the cape.  However, it wasn't the easiest to work with.  It was stretchy, so that made it hard to do measurements and sew on the machine, but it was do-able.  I actually didn't even do any measurements since I was having a hard time with it - I just held up the material to myself in the mirror and eyeballed it when cutting.  And it ended up working out just fine.

I got the fabric on sale and was able to use a coupon, too, so it was about $3 for the fabric.  And the basket was $1 at the Dollar Tree.  So, I spent $4 total on the costume.  Sa-weet!!  I originally was going to wear a black skirt, but something about the skirt wasn't jiving right with the whole ensemble, so I just wore jeans.  Really, the red hooded cape, basket, and my cute red Mary Jane heels made the costume.

I also gave myself ringlet curls - I just felt like Little Red Riding Hood should have those.   I wish I could curl my hair like that more often - it just takes way too long to do it.  :(

Here's a picture from the party - I'm showing you what's in my basket.  Turns out when you carry a basket, your friends at the party will want you to carry their stuff.  I quickly gave the disclaimer that I would not be responsible for any lost items.  Hmph.

As we were leaving the party and walking to the car, some guy from another party across the street started singing "Little Red Riding Hood".  I think he may have even howled. But, I guess I did a good job at my costume since he knew who I was supposed to be.   :)

There's still a few days left until Halloween.  If you're looking for a quick costume to DIY, this is a good choice as it doesn't take long to put together.  I can't wait to wear my costume again to take the kids trick-or-treating!

  1. Love this! Every year I would dress as Little Red Riding Hood. It is such a simple costume to make. My kids have gotten to the point where they just say, "We know who you're dressing as, Mom." This is definitely my costume for this year, also.

    1. Haha - love it! And thanks for your comment. It ended up being really simple, for sure. I'll have to see if there's another costume/character that wears capes/cloaks - I really like wearing it. :)
